What a lot of jargon! Are you confused? Here is our simplistic explanation. SEO meaning Search Engine Optimisation, that's the easy bit! Put simply search engine optimisation is the process by which a web site or page is made search engine friendly. The search engines have strict guidelines for search engine friendly web sites, sticking to these guidelines and having content rich web pages, along with good keywords, site title and description (meta tags), all go a long way to optimising your web site for search engine indexing. Now for all those terms! Search Engines - major search engines are Google, Yahoo and MSN, of course there are lots more. Search Engine Submission - this is the process of submitting your site to the search engines, we recommend hand submission to the major search engines. Search Engine Robots - these crawl through submitted web pages in order to index them. Robots.txt file - this file contains information that the robot must adhere to upon their visit of your site, for example any files, directories etc that you do not want indexed should be listed here with the relevant coding. Search Engine Indexing - Information that has been captured by the robots is stored on a database. This information is drawn upon when keywords are typed in to the search bar on a browser. Keywords - are made up of phrases, these are generally two or more words, (a phrase). Each phrase is separated by a coma. These are placed in the web sites meta tags. Meta Tags - information pertinent to the web site, such as Title, Description, keywords and such like, this is placed in the HTML, if you view any web site and right click the mouse, you will see 'view source code' as one of the options. The meta tags will be listed here, near to the top of the page. Search Engine Ranking - a guaranteed number one ranking? The thing to bear in mind here is if you search using the keywords 'search engines' you will see that not even google is in the number one spot!
